So I had another "I hadn't seen this Monkees episode in 25 years, didn't remember most of it, and then got hit with a Mack truck of a memory from one little scene" thing happen the other day:
I'm pretty sure my friend Brian and I loved this scene so much, we actually taped it on a tape recorder. I swear to god. I remembered everything from Micky's intro to Peter getting the accent right. I think — no, I know — I walked around saying "Somevun heer having trouble wits the marriage?" for at least a few days. I was that tickled by it (so tickled by it, I completely forgot about it till 25 years later, but still).
But watching these reruns has been great proof of just how deep our memories can go, and it's kind of a great little time capsule of sorts. Like, it kind of blows my mind that this stuff is all lying there at the bottom of my brain, under countless song lyrics ("She had 9/10 pants and a very big bra."), random old baseball moments (Mike Stanley's grand slam on sock night, circa 1993 - all those socks came raining down on the field, yo) and other things that will have no impact on my daily life, yet have none the less been committed to memory.
I did not, however, remember this scene, which also aired this past weekend. Because Davy's maniacal laugh, the New Jersey shout-out, and Micky's steroid voice would've probably made this 10-year-old KB's favorite episode, bar none (35-year-old KB's fave is different, but I'll save that for another post. You're chomping at the bit with excitement, I know.)
Two minutes of utter delight, that thar. Well, for me, anyway.
