I'm not much of a Yankees missionary (I want people to like whatever team they choose... so long as "Yankees suck" does not escape their lips in my presence), but I have been helping my friend Rachel, a San Jose native with no previous team attachments, embrace the Bronx Bombers. She's gladly come to games and has been soaking up random trivia and has accompanied me to bars for game-watching (with double-secret agent purposes, but that's another post for another day). Anyway, a few weeks ago, she and her cousin came to Snoopy Bobblehead Doll night with me, and the Awesome Getting to Know You Segment asked players, "What animal would you be"? While I was surprised how many fancied themselves eagles, Russell Martin was the MVP of this one, with his answer of a "I think I'd be a bear and a gorilla. A Bearilla."
So last night, after we left the bar in the 7th inning (and I got home in more than enough time for the rally. Calm down, people), and Monsiuer Martin is Le Hero, Rachel texts the following:
Yes, so from here on in, Monsiuer Martin will be like Prince and be referred to as "Bear, monkey, baseball emoticon." (Though he surely deserves much more than that, given that his homer was the first time I breathed in like 3 hours last night)
